All words in the language classified as one of the parts of speech. Understanding these different parts of speech can allow you to communicate more fluently, it can allow you to write more quality essays, it can help you to punctuate sentences properly. These are all the foundations of learning to speak and write in English. These tips can be helpful for anyone even if you are a native English speaker. It always helps to get back to the foundations of the language and to re-learn a few of these skills. So, if youre interested, continue watching. Cath Anne: [00:01:28] The 8 parts of speech are nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. Last week we discussed nouns and pronouns and this week we are going to give you a brief overview of the other parts of speech. You can feel free to pause the video at any time to stop and take notes, read what Ive put on the board, if thats of benefit to you. Cath Anne: [00:02:04] Lets start with the verb. A verb is a word that describes an action or a state of being. Now, the second part of the definition here is really important as many believe that verbs are only words that indicate an action or that can be visualized. This is true of words like, walk, run, jump, play, sing, laugh, dance. Cath Anne: [00:02:40] Those are all words that indicate actions. Our options. However, there are also linking verbs and these are words that indicate a state of being, classification or existence. The following are the most common linking-verbs: is, am, were, was. And then we also have verb phrases ending in be, been and being. So, keep in mind that these are all verbs as well even though they dont indicate blatant action. Cath Anne: [00:03:15] Another thing to remember is that verbs often change their ending to indicate a temporal relationship or a relationship to time. This is referred to as verb tense. For example, walk is the present tense of the verb to walk and walked with an ed added to it indicates the past tense of the verb walk. Cath Anne: [00:03:43] So, as you see there, we change the verb tense depending on its relationship to time. Cath Anne: [00:03:53] Moving on to the adjectives. An adjective modifies, limits, or describes a noun or a pronoun. Essentially it provides more information about the person, place or thing it is describing. For example, in the sentence, Frank is a tall, skinny man can you guess which are the adjectives? Tall and skinny are both adjectives because they describe the, noun or the subject, who is Frank. Cath Anne: [00:04:30] Then we have adverbs. They are certainly similar to adjectives, but they act in the same way towards verbs. So, they modify a verb. You might recognize adverbs because they generally tend to end in ly. Cath Anne: [00:04:48] So, for example, in a sentence, Susan walked slowly towards the door, the adverb would be the word slowly, because it describes how Susan walked. Cath Anne: [00:05:11] A preposition shows the relationship between a noun and a verb. this one is also in relation to time, or space, or direction. Cath Anne: [00:05:22] Now, Ill explain this a little bit more. So, for instance, lets take the sentence, Mark walked toward the door. The word toward is a preposition because it indicates that Mark is walking in a certain direction. When linked with nouns and pronouns, prepositions create phrases that are called prepositional phrases. So, for example, in the sentence I just gave you, toward the door is considered a prepositional phrase because it ends with the word toward. Cath Anne: [00:06:03] Finally, we have conjunctions. These ones are really quite fun. Conjunctions are used to link words and parts of sentences together. They can also be considered joining words. There are four different types of conjunctions. We have coordinating conjunctions, we have subordinating conjunctions, we have conjunctive adverbs, and we have correlative conjunctions. Dont worry, Ill walk you through. Cath Anne: [00:06:31] Such. Dont worry a lot. So, coordinating conjunctions are words like: for, and, Nor, but, or, yet, so. Cath Anne: [00:06:47] They are used to connect similar words or independent clauses, in other words, sentences together. Coordinating conjunctions are often referred to as FANBOYS. That can help you to remember all the words that are in coordinating conjunctions. Cath Anne: [00:07:14] Subordinating conjunctions come at the beginning of a subordinate clause. They are used to connect the subordinate clause to the rest of the sentence. They can also be referred to as the independent clause. Common subordinating conjunctions are: after, although, because, before, even though, if, once, rather than, since that, though, unless, until, whenever, whereas, and while. That was a lot of words. For example, I went to the cafeteria before I went to class. Cath Anne: [00:07:58] The word before connects the subordinate clause, I went to class with the independent clause, I went to the cafeteria. So, the word before was a conjunction because it joins those two clauses. Cath Anne: [00:08:19] We then have conjunctive adverbs, and these are going to be really important for you guys, so, make sure you pay attention here. These are transitional words used to connect one sentence to another. Cath Anne: [00:08:20] Common conjunctive adverbs include: additionally, in addition, moreover, also, however, for example, in conclusion. You probably recognize ones a little bit. This is because conjunctive adverbs can be really helpful when you are writing an essay. There many times that you will want your essay to flow so you will use a conjunctive adverb to join one sentence with another and continue your thought process. Definitely, take note of those and use them in your writing. Cath Anne: [00:09:14] Then, last but not least, we have correlative conjunctions. They are a combination of coordinating conjunctions with another word. For example, in the sentence, Both John and I are having a hard time at homework, both and and would be considered correlative conjunctions because as you can see they join the sentence together. They join John and I together and they make the sentence flow properly. Cath Anne: [00:09:53] Okay, so, I hope that was of benefit to you. Nirupama Nityanandan: a snake in her hair Essay Ive been on stage since the age of 10. The smell of makeup, dressing rooms, sweat, costumes in their boxes for months, the smell of the stage its so familiar, so strangely similar everywhere in the world, muses Indian-born actress Nirupama Nityanandan. How can there be people who dont know those things? What strange creatures we are! Watching Nityanandan as Queen Rani in the Guthrie Theater of Minneapoliss American premiere of Garish Karnads Naga Mandala (Play with a Cobra), its quite obvious that she is the most exacting, exotic creature on stage. Her movement is flawless and reveals some deeply ingrained training, some knowledge of the body that sets her apart from the other actors. She invites a cobra into her hair, and makes it move even though its only a ribbon around her arms and face like an animal with an agenda. The play, which ran on the Guthrie main stage from July through September under Garland Wrights direction, is a combination of Indian folktales about Rani and her vain husband Appanna, or Anyman. Naga, the Cobra, falls in love with Rani and disguises himself as Appanna to wend his way into her bed each evening. Rani, who has never slept with the real Appanna, becomes pregnant and is charged with adultery. The two narrators of Naga Mandala the Playwright and the Story have contending ideas about how to resolve this tangle of husband, wife and snake. The Playwright invokes tragedy and doom: Rani is cleared of the charges, but Naga is crushed by a rock. The Story opts for a brand of not-unhappy resignation: The snake survives to live out his days, clandestinely, in Ranis hair. But it is Rani, Appanna and Naga not the narrators who must endure each alternative, learn by experience which of the resolutions works and which doesnt. Their lives are transformed into an array of possibilities. The Playwright and Story dictate, but the actors make it live. Nityanandan likes Minnesota. Last season she appeared in a succession of Greek tragedies at the Brooklyn Academy of Music under the direction of her mentor and friend, Ariane Mnouchkine, but experiencing New York did not prepare her for her first glimpse of the space in the middle of this country. Pathologically adaptable   Its so big, she says. Ive liked being here in Minneapolis what one does in a place means why you stay. I feel completely comfortable staying here. Ariane Mnouchkine, artistic director of the acclaimed Theatre du Soleil, found Nityanandan at an audition, a meeting which would mean more to the young performer than just international recognition. She helped me discover what I already knew, the actress says. Nityanandan shares some of the cultural obstacles Garish Karnad experienced in writing Naga Mandala: While my past had come to my aid with a readymade narrative within which I could contain and explore my insecurities, the playwright says, there had been no dramatic structure in my own tradition to which I could relate myself. Nityanandan faced a similar conundrum, and under Mnouchkines direction, she bloomed. Ariane said I had a method when I worked. Such respect helped establish the Camaro as the premier high-performance pony car. Camaro sales increased each year form 1967-1969. To this day, these Camaros are the favorite among enthusiasts. The Camaro brings a bad-boy image to the street and the track. The car has always been based on racing even when the Camaro was not officially involved. â€Å"It’s at home drag racing, and racing away from convenience stores after hold-ups. Because of this, media has given the Camaro a bad boy reputation.†(American Muscle Cars, 47) 1969 saw several noteworthy changes to the Camaro. The grill became deeper set, the taillamps were longer and thinner and broken into three segments. A heavy "eye-brow" crease was added on the both sides of the car extending from the front wheel well to the rear wheel well. A matching crease went from the rear wheel well to the rear quarter panel. Endura rubbe... ...white was perhaps better suited to the older cars, but the look was still striking. Chevrolet even revived the interior with 30th anniversary logos. White wheels added to the effect. 1998 was a big year for the Camaro. It received a major refreshening with body upgrades including a new front fascia, a new hood, composite reflector headlamps, and new fenders. The 1998 model also received chassis upgrades, a new 4-wheel disc brake system and a new anti-lock brake system (ABS). But the biggest upgrade was the all new LS1 V8 engine for the Camaro Z28. This new engine produces 335 horsepower. That’s more than twice the standard horsepower offered in the 1982 Z28, to shine a little perspective on the state of modern high-performance. Although most Camaros sold through the years have not been performance models, it is still the image and reputation of the various Super Sports, Z28’s, Pace Cars, and IROC-Zs that have defined the Camaro and kept the car in the public eye. While other car fashions have changed, Camaro buyers still want powerful V8s driving the real wheels, preferably with a manual transmission between the two. Happiness: Meaning of Life Essay

While happiness in a scientific sense can be explained as the chemicals released throughout our bodies, it still doesn’t tell us fully why these are chemicals are sent and what it means in the overall human experience in scientific terms. From an artistic perspective happiness is the largest component in providing self-worth to one’s self and with its absence we see people delve into the depths of depression losing the motivation and ability to perform tasks and live life to its fullest, and in some extreme cases losing the will to live. On the opposite side of depression there is euphoria and this is where people experience moments in their life that they remember and cherish during times of reflection, it is at these moments when we find the most purpose in our lives especially when we enjoy what we are enjoying so therefore Aristotle’s statement can easily be viewed as correct as this essay will argue for. What does it mean to be happy? It seems that this is another one of those questions that can be argued in multiple ways but for this essay I will take Aristotle’s definition. Happiness, from Aristotle’s definition of a human as a being who recognises his potential to give form to himself (Colebrook 2006, p. 2). A person with depression and the utter lack of happiness views themself as worthless and lose their passion of living, losing much their ability and potential. This fact of people committing suicide when they are overcome with sadness demonstrates that without happiness human beings lose their meaning and passion in life. Without this passion and drive depressed people tend to isolate themselves and do not ‘live’ their lives to its fullest extent. It seems therefore that the purpose of our lives is to find those things that do make us happy, and then doing them. If there’s a certain person in our lives that makes us happy, we need to find a way to spend more time with them. Because if you’re not happy, you need to look at your life and think about why you aren’t feeling that amazing thing you want to be feeling. When a person reflects back on their life in their elder years the memoires they tend to remember are based around the feelings of joy and happiness such as the birth of their children or their first kiss, spending times with friends etc. These memories are fundamentally the building blocks of their personalities and without these moments of happiness a person would more than likely feel unfulfilled in their lives in reflection. We see this time and again when renowned people who have achieved great accomplishments turn to drugs and seep into mental illness when they are not happy with the direction of their life. This then demonstrates that regardless of what you accomplish if you are not enjoying what you are doing you may lose meaning in your life and turn to unhealthy methods so that you can cope with your current life style. Thirdly when people have the available time and resources it is more than likely that they will spend this leisure time doing activities that make them feel happy and give them self-satisfaction. ‘Happiness can also be a by-product of working’ (Andersen, W, 2008) occupation that the person enjoys. It therefore seems that humans will go through burdens so that they may enjoy the activity of their choice. An example of this would be working all week in a occupation you do not enjoy so that you may go on a camping trip with your family, supporting the coming saying that people ‘live for the weekend’ as that is during the time when they are doing activities they enjoy, although these kinds of one off activities do not demonstrate lifelong happiness it must be something ongoing, a more long term activity that can be used as an example could be coaching a junior sport team. This therefore demonstrates if recreational activities are what people are working towards and it is what makes them happy it must then tie in with what they consider meaningful in life and therefore be its purpose. If you can find something that makes you happy, truly happy, then life will be a lot better for you. It can’t be something superficial, or something that only lasts for a day or two. It’s something that affects your entire life. It lasts. It burns inside of you and it doesn’t go out. That is happiness. It is therefore clear that Aristotle’s statement that happiness is the meaning and purpose of life can be argued as correct on multiple basis’s such as those people lacking happiness losing all meaning and purpose as explained in the second paragraph. In addition when people look back on their lives in reflection it is moments of happiness that people are most likely to remember and cherish and not those of turmoil and heartache. Furthermore people will pursue activities they find enjoyment and happiness in when given the opportunity demonstrating that they live for those brief moments of time. In conclusion it is clear that Aristotle’s statement may well be correct but it is entirely dependent on the individual to find what makes them happy.
